Maybe I should Update this Blog?

yeah I should.

So I have a New Job. ( been working 2 months there now) Linux admin ( OpenSystems OS) at Highmark. Job is going good. Besides working with Linux (redhat) I am also working with AIX and Solaris. I have been learning a lot about those OSs. My Linux knowledge has also been growing with leaps and bounds. Hopefully in the next few post I can start putting more stuff out here.

Watching Nagios

I have a PC in my office with a 21 inch monitor that does nothing but watch Nagios. Nice big screen so I can look up and see whats broken. I only check my email 2-3 times a day, so email alerts was not helping, and I only send the really import stuff to phone. Now the monitor is nice. ( yes there is a little beep noise on the PC when there is a problem that make me look up and see it) but what about when I am really zoned into what i’m working on? Well I have this firefox addon for nagios checking. It’s really nice. After all I can’t really think with out a web browser open, can you?

units

I had a little problem in our dataroom today.  Our AC unit didn’t want to play nice.  I have an APC Enviromental Monitor which was showing the room to be 24.13 degress.  Now that is in C not F. So i found this nice little program already installed on my suse10 (linux) called “units”.  just type units and hit enter.  it asks,”You have:”  reply:  tempC(24.13) enter. it says: “You want:” you type: tempF  enter.  it gives you: 75.434
nice little program.  After reading the man page for it I found it can convert all kinds of stuff.

Zimbra

I have been working on Zimbra. Currently we use M$ Exchange 2000. My colleagues In Center Valley, PA are in the process of Upgrading our Mail server to 2003. I find that Odd, now that 2007 is just coming out. So my boss asked me to find some options to have a Mail server here in Harrisburg. I looked at Exchange, groupwise(novell), and Zimbra. I have spent the most time on Zimbra so far. But I find in a M$ world it really lacks. All of my users use outlook. Zimbra has 2 versions: a Opensource version and a pay for version. I have been working on the OSS version. Personally I like the zimbra client. However I dont feel that it will fit in at my company. I will keep you posted on exploration of Zimbra ( zimbra.com )
